Is there another Earth for humans?

Our search for Earth-like planets continues, but even if we do find one orbiting another star, we still don’t have the technology that will enable our civilization to utilize its resources. It’s going to take too long for us to even get there. Let’s hope that the technology catches up with the need to find another planet. At the rate we’re using up our natural resources and degrading the environment, we’re going to need a couple of Earths to sustain life as we know it.

We’ve only been in this planet for a very short time as compared to how long the Earth has been in existence. Yet, we have done so much damage to our environment and caused the extinction of so many species. Advancement in technology and the rise in population increased our need for energy, land and raw materials. We consume large amounts of paper, oil and plastic, just to name a few - and in the process, we degrade and pollute our planet. How long can this go on?

August 22, 2012 was called “Earth Overshoot Day”. From this day, our civilization is living beyond the ecological capacity of the planet. We are taking more than she can give.

We have a responsibility to take care of our home. We may belong to different countries and races but we all live in one planet and we must all come together and save it from ourselves. A lot of people say that their efforts to recycle, driving less and conserving electricity don’t make a difference. They’re right, on their own it doesn’t – but if you look at the bigger picture, one man’s contribution makes a big difference. But it’s also not enough to just practice these conservation methods. What will really make a big impact is connecting with other people and educating them on the real issues today.

It’s like lighting one candle and passing on that light until the whole world starts caring for our planet! Some things we can’t control, but there are some things that are in our hands. Once we all realize that, then things can really start changing for the better.

We are the only thinking living beings on this planet that can make a difference. Let’s make it count.
