More plastic on the ocean than fish. No joke.
Already by 2025, the ocean will contain around one ton of plastic for every three tons of fish. By 2050, there will be more plastic than fish (by weight).
I adds up
A truck-load of plastic is dumped into the sea every single minute. And the loads keep getting bigger.
One bag can become 2 million pieces of plastic
One single plastic bag can turn into 2 million microscopic fragments of plastic. These fragments find their way into all parts of ocean - from the deepest seafloor to the ice in the Arctic.
The great pacific garbage patch
Ocean currents have created areas in the world’s seas where the plastic soup gets even thicker. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is the largest of these areas. It is located between Hawaii and California and it’s massive - about 1.6 million square kilometers. Twice the size of Texas or over four times the size of Germany.
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch up to 16 times bigger than thought
In 2018, the mass of the plastic in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch was estimated to around 80,000 tons. This is 4-16 times more than previous estimations.
The weight of 10 Eiffel Towers in plastic.
1.8 trillion bits of plastic
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch consists of roughly 1.8 trillion plastic pieces. About 80 percent comes from land-based activities. About 70 percent of the debri sinks to the bottom of the ocean.
250 of the pieces are “yours”
1.8 trillion pieces of plastic is equivalent to 250 pieces for every single person on the planet.
