5.3 million people, and still growing
New Zealand is home to about 5.3 million people in 2026, the second-largest population in Oceania after Australia. It is still growing, though slowly on the UN’s projection: about 480,000 more people by 2050, for a total of 5.75 million1.
New Zealand’s own statistics agency expects a lot more. Stats NZ counted 5,357,300 people in June 2026, a little above the UN’s figure, and its median projection reaches 6.63 million by 205025. That’s nearly 900,000 more people than the UN projects, about half of today’s Auckland.
That's New Zealand's population in 2050 on the UN's projection. Stats NZ expects closer to 6.6 million
Births still outnumber deaths, for now
Women in New Zealand had 1.51 children on average in the year to June 2026, well under the 2.1 needed to hold a population steady over time3. Even so, the country still records more births than deaths, 56,268 against 38,037 that year3, partly because its population is still fairly young. The median age is 37.8 for men and 39.3 for women2.
That cushion is running out. On the UN’s projection deaths overtake births from 2047, and the population peaks at around 5.87 million in 20781. After that, any growth would have to come from migration.
Thousands leave for Australia every year
Migration already matters as much as births. In the year to June 2026 it added 17,600 people, almost exactly as many as natural increase, which added 18,7002. But that net figure hides two large flows going in opposite directions.
In 2025, 47,500 people left New Zealand for Australia while only 19,000 came the other way, a net loss of 28,500 in a single year4. Australia is a far bigger economy right next door, which goes a long way toward explaining the pull. Arrivals from the rest of the world more than made up for it, with a provisional net gain of 40,3004, so the country kept growing.
That is also where the two projections part ways. The UN assumes net migration of around 12,000 to 16,000 a year1. Stats NZ assumes it rises to 42,500 a year by 20515, which is how it ends up so much higher.

Most of those people end up in cities. Auckland alone had 1.8 million residents in mid-2025, and 64% of New Zealanders live in Auckland or one of 12 other cities6.
80 million years of isolation
New Zealand broke away from other land so long ago that its wildlife evolved almost entirely on its own.
The result is a country full of species found nowhere else. About 72% of its birds are endemic, and so are all of its native reptiles, frogs and bats7. At least 79 species have already gone extinct, 59 of them birds, and about 90% of the country’s wetlands have been lost7. Those losses are part of the global species extinction rate, and of the long decline of the world’s megafauna.
A small country with a huge farm footprint
New Zealand’s footprint is measured differently from most countries’. The open accounts don’t publish what New Zealanders consume, so the figure here is what the country produces. If every country produced at New Zealand’s rate per person, the world would need a whopping 6.73 Earths11. That number describes farms, forests and factories, not how residents live.
Most of it is land. Forest land accounts for 2.95 Earths, from the plantation timber New Zealand grows and exports, and grazing land for another 1.31, the pasture behind its sheep and dairy herds11. New Zealand produces only about 2% of the world’s milk, but sells a larger share of it abroad than any other country9. Carbon, the forest needed to absorb the fossil-fuel CO₂ from all that production, adds 1.25 Earths11.
Even its generous land can’t keep up. Production takes 10.10 global hectares per person, against 8.30 hectares of biocapacity, so the country draws more from its ecosystems than they renew11. Electricity, at least, is almost entirely clean: renewables generated 85.5% of it in 202410.
If the whole world produced at the same rate per person as New Zealand, we'd need 6.73 Earths. This measures what is produced there, not what its residents consume.
1 Earth (world biocapacity per person)
What's driving it
That's more than the world average of 1.71 Earths. What is produced in New Zealand draws on more biocapacity than its own land can renew.
Predator Free 2050: winning birds back
New Zealand is trying to undo some of that damage. Predator Free 2050 aims to clear the country of the rats, stoats and possums that kill native birds, and Wellington has been named to lead the programme’s next phase8.
The early results are striking. Where predators were removed on the Miramar Peninsula, native bird numbers rose by about 136%8.
Where New Zealand is heading
By 2050 New Zealand will probably have somewhere between 5.75 and 6.6 million people, and the gap between those numbers is almost entirely a question of who moves in and who leaves for Australia. Either way, the country’s biggest environmental weight comes from what it grows and sells to the world. More people will matter less to that footprint than what happens on its farms and in its plantation forests.
New Zealand is the second-largest population in Oceania, after Australia.
