United Mexican States
The official name of Mexico is the United Mexican States. The largest of the 31 states of Mexico is Mexico with 15.2 million inhabitants. The state of Mexico is not to be confused with the country of Mexico (or the city for that matter). The second largest state is Veracruz with 7.6 million people followed by Jalisco with a population of 7.4 million.

Mexico has 10 cities with over a million inhabitants. The largests are:
- Mexico City: 8.9 million
- Ecatepec: 1.7 million
- Guadalajara: 1.5 million.
Mexico City
The capital of Mexico is Mexico City. The metropolitan area of Mexico City (also called Greater Mexico City) consists of 16 Municipalities and has a population of more than 21 million people (2016) making it the 10th largest metropolitan area in the world. 21 million people is equivalent to the combined populations of Greece and Portugal or the population of the state of Florida. The largest metropolitan area in the world is Tokyo, Japan with almost 38 million people.

On average Mexican women have 2.2 children. The life expectancy is 76.5 years - 74.0 for men and 79.0 for women.
A young population
Mexico has a relatively young population. With 28.3 years the median age is below the world average of 30.4 years. Only 6.7 percent of the population is 65 and over. To compare, in Germany 19.6 percent is 65 years or older.
The Mexican economy
Mexico is the 15th largest economy in the world. The country is expected to climb to 8th place by 2050. Main export goods include automobiles and electronics.
