Did you know that 4.3 babies are born every second? It is expected that the world’s population will grow to 8 to 10 billion by 2050.
If you look at the size of the Earth’s continents, you’d wonder why over population should be a problem. There are lots of empty space available and surely we can accommodate a couple of billion of more. Well, that would be true if we just stood on our own personal space and didn’t do anything else, like a rock.
The more our numbers grow, the larger our needs become and we will reach a point when the Earth can no longer sustain the lifestyle we’ve become used to. The planet’s resources are not infinite and we are using them faster than they can be replenished. Some resources cannot even be replenished. We are depleting our planet’s natural resources. The way that we live, we will need 1 1/2 Earth’s to sustain the whole population.
Not only do we need input from the planet, we generate a lot of output too. We have a very high carbon footprint and it is not good for the environment we live in. WeYou may not want to hear it but humans are very destructive to the planet. We deplete and we pollute. We are only learning about the folly of our ways in this generation.
In fairness, governments and environmentalists are trying to correct the negative effects of industrialization and population explosion. They are trying to ensure that the planet’s resources will be enough to sustain our future generation. It’s a big undertaking and they need all the help they can get.
