“Phthalates” are chemicals used as softeners in plastics, oily substances in perfumes, additives in hair sprays, and more. They have been linked to several serious health effects; including reduced fertility, miscarriage, birth defects, abnormal sperm counts, testicular damage…and more!
The world produces 175 kilos of phthalates every second. These chemicals are used in millions of products, including toys, food, clothing, cleaning and personal care products, packaging, medical devices, household appliances, and electronics.
Phthalates leave traces everywhere in soil and water - even in places where you would not expect it. Today, for example, scientists have found phthalates in a species of deep sea jellyfish that lives 1,000 meters below the surface of the North Atlantic!
Unborn chicken die when they are exposed to a 0.4 percent concentration of one of the most common phthalates. This level of phthalate concentration can be reached in human blood - simply by storing the blood in vinyl bags for a day or two.
Soybean oil, for example, can be a better plastic softener than phthalates. In the United States, vegetable oil softeners represent about 15 percent of the market for phthalates. Do what you can to avoid products that use phthalates.
Phthalates, or phthalate esters, are esters of phthalic acid and are mainly used as plasticizers (substances added to plastics to increase their flexibility, transparency, durability, and longevity). They are used primarily to soften polyvinyl chloride. About 5.5 million tons of phthalates are produced globally a year.
