Keep calm… there’s a shift in the weather!

Did you notice a change in the weather? Maybe it’s a little warmer where you are or suddenly you experience snow? What about the crazy storms hitting the tropical countries like Typhoon Yolanda? Climate change is real and it’s upon us. Global warming is not just a scare tactic.

More: Alarming Facts about Global Warming

Global Warming is the main cause of climate change. There have been times in the distant past when our climate changed drastically causing the Earth to freeze or cool. The Earth seems to be destined to undergo these cyclical changes based on solar and volcanic activity. But it has been proven that in these times, human activity is the reason for the changes in our climate.

Here are some shocking facts that you may not be aware of. These are all indicators of Global Warming.

  • According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the period between 2000 and 2010 are the warmest ever recorded.
  • The average temperature of the Earth has increased by more than 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit over the last 100 years.

More: Information about Global Warming

  • Scientists predict that the global average temperature will rise between 2 and 12 degrees Fahrenheit by 2100.
  • Some countries are experiencing more rainfall while others are going through intense dry spells and heat waves.
  • Our oceans are becoming warmer and more acidic.
  • The Glaciers are melting and Sea Levels are rising. This is a threat to coastal cities, crops and human lives.

More: Rising Sea Level Effects

  • For every change in temperature of 2 degrees, there is a reduction in yield of crops and increased incidence of wildfires.
  • Other countries experience colder than normal winter seasons. In the Eastern USA, the winters of 2010 and 2011 were colder compared to other winters in the past decades.
  • Before the industrial revolution, the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere was 280 parts per million. As of March 2009, it was at 387 ppm.
  • The amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is higher today than at any time in the last 650,000 years.

At the current pace of the rise in global average temperatures, approximately 20 to 30 percent of plant and animal life are in danger of extinction – which means that our food source is threatened and our survival is also threatened.

The Earth has experienced warming in the past, but we weren’t here yet. The reason why humans flourished is largely because the planet’s temperature is bearable for our species – it is “just right”. Any extreme change in temperature will have a significant effect to our survival.
