PVC (or Polyvinyl chloride) is a...
very common plastic. So, is PVC toxic? Well, in a word, yes! PVC health risks include cancer and reproductive problems. And it can get inside our body from the many everyday products it is used in.

Top 6 facts about pvc plastics

1

PVC is everywhere

PVC plastic is one of the most common synthetic materials in the world. PVC is used in millions of different products, ranging from clothing to electronics to kitchen appliances. The world’s current production of PVC is 34 million tons every year - or about 5 kilos for every person on the planet.

2

And it is linked to cancer...

Male workers in PVC plants have 6 times greater risk of developing seminoma (a form of testicular cancer) compared to the general population. World production of PVC will reach 40 million tons in 2016.

3

...and other bad stuff

Children in homes with vinyl flooring containing PVC are nearly 90 percent more likely to develop bronchial obstruction and symptoms of asthma compared to children living in homes with floors that are PVC-free.

4

It’s building up...

Less than 3 percent of PVC is recycled. Since the 1990s, PVC-waste is increasingly being shipped to China, India, or Africa for “reprocessing”. When reaching these locations the PVC is usually either just burned or put in land fills.

Remark from a Californian nurse:

“I came to the chilling realization that the trash I throw away on my unit is actually causing people to get the cancer and reproductive problems which I’m then treating.” (PVC and phthalates are widely used in medical equipment).

6

The good news

There are alternatives available for almost every application of PVC.

PVC plastics

Polyvinyl chloride, (IUPAC Poly(chloroethanediyl)) commonly abbreviated PVC, is a thermoplastic polymer. It is a vinyl polymer constructed of repeating vinyl groups (ethenyls) having one of their hydrogens replaced with a chloride group. Polyvinyl chloride is the third most widely produced plastic, after polyethylene and polypropylene. PVC is widely used in construction because it is cheap, durable, and easy to assemble.
